King Arthur Flour Selected as One of Vermont's Best Places to Work
Employee-Owned Company Ranks High for Second Year Running
August 29, 2007 – Norwich, Vt. – For the second year in a row, the King Arthur Flour Company, a 100% employee-owned business in Norwich, Vt., was selected this week as one of the top four Best Places to Work in Vermont (large company division). Final rankings will be announced at an awards gala in Burlington in November. King Arthur Flour received the top ranking in 2006, the award's inaugural year.
The survey and award program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best workplaces in Vermont, companies that benefit the state's economy, its workforce and its businesses.
"As employee owners, we don't just work for a paycheck here at King Arthur. We work because we have a mission. We want to make the world a better place, and if baking is the way to do it, then let's go for it, with all our hearts," said P.J. Hamel, long-time employee-owner and editor of The Baker’s Catalogue. "Every one of us feels empowered to do the right thing for our customers. And within the company, we feel personally valued and respected. It just doesn't get any better than that!"
Award winners are determined in large part by an anonymous survey completed by employees to measure their experiences and find out what they really think about their companies; 70% of the judging for the award is based on those survey results. Judging also includes evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. The award program recognizes 10 small/medium-size companies (15-99 employees) and four large-size companies (more than 100 employees).
The program, now in its second year in Vermont, was created by Vermont Business Magazine, the Vermont State Chamber of Commerce, the Vermont Department of Labor, the Society for Human Resource Management-Vermont State Council, the Vermont Department of Economic Development, and the Best Companies Group and sponsored by HMC Advertising. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Vermont with assistance from ModernThink LLC, which analyzes the data and determines the final rankings. This year, King Arthur Flour has been named a finalist for the Global Call Center of the Year Award from the International Customer Management Institute (winner to be announced mid September); its bimonthly baking newsletter The Baking Sheet was honored with a Gold Award in Design by “The Newsletter on Newsletters”; and the company's latest cookbook, King Arthur Flour Whole Grain Baking, was named a finalist in the Baking and Dessert category for a James Beard Award. In 2006, King Arthur Flour received the Best Place to Work in Vermont Award (large company division); the Deane C. Davis Outstanding Vermont Business Award, which honors a Vermont business that "shows an outstanding history of sustained growth while displaying an acute awareness of what makes Vermont unique"; and the Better Business Bureau Local Torch Award for Excellence in recognition of its commitment to ethical business practices.
America's oldest flour company, King Arthur Flour was founded in Boston, Mass., in 1790 and moved its headquarters to Vermont in 1984. The company has grown since then from a regional staple to a brand known nationwide for its purity and consistent quality; from a small mail-order business with five employees in 1990 to the premier baking resource with more than 160 employees today; from a family-owned operation for five generations to a 100 percent employee-owned business. King Arthur
Flour is the parent company of The Baker's Catalogue, which offers more than 1,000 professional-grade baking tools and ingredients through its catalogue, online at kingarthurflour.com, and at The Baker's Store in Norwich, Vt.
