Mardi Gras King Cake Kit sales generate more than $2,000 for hurricane relief efforts

March 10, 2006 Norwich, Vt.Record sales of The Baker’s Catalogue’s Mardi Gras King Cake Kit generated more than $2,000

in donations to the Salvation Army for hurricane relief, putting a traditional piece of the Mardi Gras celebration to work for those

in need.

The King Arthur Flour Company of Norwich, Vt., donated $2 to the Salvation Army’s hurricane relief efforts for each King Cake Kit sold this year. All told, the company made a donation of $2,170 and increased its sales of King Cake Kits by 40 percent over last year. The kit and King Arthur Flour’s offered donation made it into the media nationwide, including the New Orleans Times

Picayune, the San Jose Mercury News, the Hartford Courant and the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

“As we celebrated Mardi Gras, we wanted to make a contribution to help in the ongoing restoration of the lives of the people affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita,” said The Baker’s Catalogue Merchandising Director Karen Colberg. “We’re happy to

report King Arthur Flour is able to make a donation of more than $2,000!”

King Arthur Flour has historically offered the King Cake Kits –  which include a yeasted sweet dough mix, almond paste, sugar glaze, and green, yellow and purple decorating sugar – around Mardi Gras time, but this is the first year that the company has attached a philanthropic aspect to the kit’s sales.
