King Arthur Flour Wins Better Business Bureau’s 2006 Torch Award

Award Honors Commitment to Ethical Business Practices

Norwich, Vt. – April 12, 2006 – The King Arthur Flour Company of Norwich, Vt., was honored this week with the Better Business Bureau’s 2006 Local Torch Award for Excellence, an award honoring “remarkable businesses committed to promoting ethical business practices,” according to the Better Business Bureau. King Arthur Flour will now be considered for the International Torch Award by the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

“We’re both proud and humbled,” said King Arthur Flour President Steve Voigt. “It’s great for our employee-owners to be

recognized for their efforts in the area of social responsibility, and we greatly value the sharing of ideas among the companies

doing leading social responsibility work.”

King Arthur Flour was rated top in its category, which includes businesses in Eastern Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont with 100

to 999 employees. Employee-owned King Arthur Flour includes nearly 200 employee-owners at its White River Junction and Norwich, Vt., facilities, as well as several salespeople around the country.

King Arthur Flour is America’s oldest flour company, with 216 years in business. Its common-sense business plan, simply, is to invest in its customers, its employees, and its community. More than its growth and success, the King Arthur Flour Company is proud of its social legacy, including 100 percent employee-ownership, active volunteer and donation programs, educational outreach, and positive recognition in the baking and business communities. The company believes success depends on the teamwork and performance of all its employee-owners, and takes a proactive approach in creating a positive work environment, including paid time off for volunteer work, flexible career paths, social events, a weekly employee newsletter, and employee recognition events and programs.

“This year’s Torch Award winners should be especially proud. The BBB received three times the number of submissions in 2006

than we did in 2005,” said Kevin J. Sanders, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau Inc. Serving Eastern Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont. “The four Torch Award winners exemplify exceedingly high standards of business practices, truthful sales and advertising, and a reputation for noteworthy contributions to their industries and the communities in which they do business.”

King Arthur Flour was also recently a finalist for this year’s Large Company Terry Ehrich Award from Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility. That award honors outstanding contributions in the areas of workplace, political, social and natural environments.

King Arthur Flour is one of America’s best-selling flours, known by avid bakers for its consistent baking performance and lack of chemical additives. King Arthur Flour is the parent company of The Baker’s Catalogue, which offers more than 1,000 professional-grade baking tools and ingredients through its catalogue, online at bakerscatalogue.com, and at The Baker’s Store in Norwich, Vermont.
