Thanks for the recipe and humorous yet helpful tidbits like what kids naturally do with cardboard rolls--ha ha! This cookie is a tradition in my family, my grandma and mother made them more cake-like and did not roll them, but dolloped the filling on a dollop of dough then another little tsp of dough on top of filling. My daughter calls them Jewish Cookies because of the dates, and my mother's heritage. Thanks for the cranberry edition, now I know what to do with fresh cranberries besides floating them in bowls with candles or making cranberry relish no one eats! I like the rolled wheel version better-more even distribution of date filling , and looks so much better! Love the blog and love King Arthur Flour- I'm a devoted customer!

This is the same as my grandmother's recipe!! My mother and I have made these for years. There is also a chocolate coconut filling but it's not nearly as good as the dates.

I like the idea of using the paper towel rolls. My last batch of log dough cookies were decidedly square. That's what I like the best about this blog -the little tricks that make things turn out better.

So, I've made rugelach, spritz, kipfel cookies, Tre Colore, biscotti, gingerbread men, and even sugar cookies...but cooky baking is never complete until I make date pinwheels.

My husband eyed them rather suspiciously as I fussed a bit over them earlier today - I am a HORRIBLE rolled cooky baker, and if they're not sugar cookies or peanut butter cookies, he's skeptical anyway. Mine always turn out mishappen and well, rectangular. As the first batch cooled, I watched him sidle over to them, and pop one (whole, I think, to as not give away that he tried one) into his mouth. Chew, chew, chew...He grabbed 6 and ran off to the office to eat in peace since my 16 month old was begging for his own. Score!

So we made a batch without the nuts, a batch with, and they're all gone, already. And there's only 2 1/2 people in our home! I guess I'll have to make more tomorrow... ;) As well as some date-nut bread, and more rugelach, with dates, of course. :)

I used to give people the "date look" you mention. But when I went to visit my husband's family in Malta and was given things that tasted WONDERFUL and then they told me they were filled with dates - I became an instant fan. Will have to add these to my list.

Would you say these are more crunchy or chewy?
A little of both, actually. The outside gets a bit of crunch, while the insides stay bendy. You can make them crunchier with a few more minutes in the oven, if you're so inclined. Susan

OMG! These are a 'must make'! I only had some wonderful dried apricots in the house so substituted them for the dates... fantastic. Very easy but a little time consuming.. chilling, rolling, filling, chilling, slicing and baking. But, I can see how they would easily adapt to your own time schedule. I just wanted them *today*... and they are just now baking. Yummy! Thanks for the recipe!!
You're most welcome. You're right, it's a bit of a handful all in one go, but it's great fun to have a roll or two in the freezer for when the urge strikes....Susan

Would this recipe work if I substitute 1 cup of whole wheat flour for one cup of the all purpose flour? Looks wonderful!

Give it a try, Charlene. Might be a bit trickier to roll out. Try white whole wheat, for the improved flavor. PJH

They look wonderful! I wish I could reach into my computer and grab one, or maybe both. It would be hard to figure out which one I would want to eat first.
I have dates in the house so I guess the dates win. Thanks for another wonderful recipe. Happy New Year

Can this be done with dried dates or dried cranberries? Snowbound here and we have them dried but not fresh.
Yes, both will work; not to worry. I used dried dates for the filling anyway. Craisins will also do fine. Susan
