Triple Chocolate Scones: a “dark” start to Thanksgiving Day

Recipe: Triple Chocolate Scones

Thanksgiving is SO not about chocolate.

Chocolate cream pie? Maybe.

But chocolate cake? Chocolate chip cookies? Chocolate ice cream?

Try pecan pie, pumpkin bread, and ginger cookies. Cranberry cake. Apple crisp.

Chocolate, for one day in the year, takes a back seat to all its usually subsidiary flavors.

Notice I say, for ONE day of the year: Thanksgiving. And really, what’s to prevent you from slipping a bit of fudgy goodness onto the menu really early in the day Thursday? Triple Chocolate Scones go wonderfully well with your morning cup of coffee.

Plus, they augment the coffee’s caffeine as you’re prepping the turkey at 5:30 a.m…

Fresh Apple Cinnamon Scones: ’tis the season

Recipe: Fresh Apple Cinnamon Scones

There’s nothing like fresh, hot apple scones on a chilly Sunday morning in October – especially when you’re feeding a crowd.

Make and shape them the night before, stick in the freezer, bake early the next morning, and Bob’s your uncle – by the time your house guests emerge from their respective beds, breakfast is ready.

Of course, it helps if you remember to PUT THE SCONES ON THE TABLE. The pumpkin doughnuts, too.

Neither of which made an appearance one recent Sunday when I was entertaining 11 visiting family members.

All of whom ended up eating Cap’n Crunch and stale English muffins for breakfast, to my great and lasting chagrin.

What happened?

Mojito Scones: happy hour, meet breakfast.

Recipe: Mojito Scones

Mojito (mo-HEE-toe), def.: a cocktail consisting of rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water, and mint.

I’m sure many of you have heard of this summer drink, which has become wildly popular in the past 5 years or so.

Would you be surprised if I told you it was Ernest Hemingway’s favorite cocktail?

Yeah, that’s right; this drink can actually be classified as “venerable,” right up there with the Rob Roy and Sidecar.

What goes around, comes around…

Blueberry Scones: American makeover for a British classic

Recipe: Blueberry Scones

Have you ever made scones?

If so, you realize an American-style scone is simply a gussied-up biscuit.

More sugar. More fat. And certainly more add-ins – like dried cherries, and chocolate chips, and pecans…

More is just enough. It’s the American way!

“Where’s the canned pumpkin?!” News of pumpkin shortage has bakers running scared.

Recipe: Harvest Pumpkin Scones

Remember The Great Pumpkin Shortage of 2009?

Just as fall baking season kicked into gear, shoppers found supermarket shelves devoid of canned pumpkin. A disastrous crop year in the Midwest, the country’s prime pumpkin-growing region, spelled doom for many a Thanksgiving pie-baker that year.

And this year, you may think we’re in for more of the same.

Strawberries & Cream Scones: June swoon.

Recipe: Strawberries & Cream Scones

Strawberries and cream.

The words go together like… well, not like love and marriage. Those used to go together automatically. Now, not so much.

And not like peanut butter and jelly. Since peanuts are pretty much banned from elementary schools these days, it’s more like soynut spread and jelly.

Just doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it?

How about wine, women, and song? Sexist.

Halloween and candy? Dangerous.

Computers and crash? Sorry, IT…

Ah, here’s one we can all agree on: Night and day.  It works backwards, too: day and night.

But still, not nearly as compelling as those succulent strawberries and rich, smooth cream.

Pumpkin is back! Celebrate with scones.

Recipe: Harvest Pumpkin Scones

From “USA Today,” Sept. 27, 2010:

“PORTLAND, Ore. – Pumpkin lovers can relax: A nearly year-long shortage of the canned stuff is over. That means an end to the hoarding, rationing and even pumpkin profiteering that have been going on since heavy rain ruined last year’s harvest and caused a shortfall…”

WHEW! I’d been having serious worries about the absence of canned pumpkin in the baking aisle of my local grocery store.

I mean, for weeks I’d been heaving disappointed sighs every time I looked at the hugely expensive cans of organic butternut squash crowding the shelf where my favorite One-Pie canned pumpkin ought to be. read the rest of this entry »
