We've outgrown our home...

...and we're expanding our campus. The classes and products we offer here at our home in Norwich, Vermont inspire and encourage people nationwide to bake - people like you. And with steadily increasing traffic at our education center, bakery, and retail store/café, we've outgrown our facilities. Our current two buildings are being consolidated into one large campus, where you'll be able to enjoy more classes in bright new quarters, a delicious meal in the warmth of our café, and much more elbow room as you browse our Baker's Store. Plus, watch artisan bakers at work in our bakery.

Groundbreaking for this project was June 2011, with completion scheduled for July 2012. We'll be OPEN throughout, on our normal schedule. Come see what we're up to -- we look forward to your visit! Questions? Call us, 800-827-6836; or read more below.

design & construction

Who's designing and building the facility?

Are you using local tradespeople?

While not all trades have been finalized at this time, so far the vast majority are headquartered in Vermont or New Hampshire.

Will it be LEED-certified?

We are committed to pursuing sustainable building practices and to designing and building an environmentally responsible and efficient building. We will not be pursuing the LEED label due to the additional fees for processing and certification. Alternatively, we are putting those funds towards additional responsible design elements and materials. We are also working closely with Efficiency Vermont to attain their Core Performance rating of energy efficiency.

How much is it going to cost?

The estimated project cost is $8 to $10 million.

What's happening to the current bakery building?

The Sands Building, named after our founder’s family, is the building at the top of our driveway currently housing our bakery and baking education center. Unfortunately, this building doesn't warrant further renovation, and will be taken down and removed, once the new facility is complete.

visiting during construction

Will you be open during construction?

Yes. We'll do our best to make your visit comfortable, though we anticipate tighter quarters in the store, and a slightly longer walk from parking lot to buildings. As construction progresses, the parking situation will evolve; we'll provide directional signs to help you navigate any changes.

What about parking?

Front and back parking lots, both adjacent to the store, are open for your convenience.

Where will RVs and buses park?

With the reopening of the back parking lots, buses and RVs will be able to park onsite through the end of construction.

Will the King Arthur throne be available?

Our favorite photo-op spot will be on hiatus this summer, but will return in 2012!

Will the trails be open?

Access to the King Arthur Trail will be limited during the fall of 2011 and early winter of 2012. The trailheads on Mill Road and the athletic fields will be available, but parking at (or traversing across) the current rear parking lot at King Arthur will not be possible until sometime in winter 2012. Visit the Upper Valley Trails Alliance to find other trails in the area.

WiFi

Will there be WiFi?

The facility will continue to offer free wireless Internet access.

Will there be a restaurant?

We will have an expanded bakery and café — with much more space for sitting and enjoying our artisan breads, pastries, sandwiches, salads and more.

Will you be hiring more employees?

Yes, we anticipate hiring new employees in many areas.

Can we see the plans?

Sure; take a look.

Have you built a model of the new facility?

We do not have a model at this time.

Will there be tours?

One of our King Arthur retail team members will be dedicated to welcoming visitors; and answering questions about the day's events, the building, and our company's history.

Will there be a flour mill on the new site so that we can watch grain being milled?

You will not see grain actually milled at our Norwich, VT, site; you will be able to learn about it from employees, reading material, and video. Our flour is milled in several locations around the country, but not here in Vermont.

Can we watch the bakers bake?

Yes! We are excited our bakery will be central to our new facility, with viewing windows easily accessible from all entrances; we invite you to visit and watch these artisans at work.

Will there be more parking?

Yes, we will have parking for about 150 cars, as well as bus/RV parking.

Will you offer more products?

Our mission is to be the premier baking resource for, and inspiration to, bakers worldwide; this guides all of our product decisions. We expect to offer more specialty ingredients. We will also expand our selection of tools, equipment, and gifts, as well as local products. In addition, we’ll be featuring a new assortment of spreads, oils, cheeses, and other exciting options to accompany our bakery’s artisan breads.

Will you sell gluten free in bulk?

No – due to the proximity to bulk wheat products, we won't be able to offer gluten-free ingredients in bulk; only pre-bagged.

Are you going to open other stores in other locations?

This option is always on the table, but we plan on launching this current project before considering a second location.
