April 24, 2008 Norwich, VT The employee-owned King Arthur Flour Company of Norwich, VT, was named today as one of the Most Democratic Workplaces in a competition sponsored by WorldBlu, Inc., an Atlanta-based business specializing in organizational democracy. King Arthur Flour is among 25 organizations selected for the award, including for-profit and non-profit organizations in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and Malaysia.
“King Arthur Flour’s ownership structure and employee involvement are two of our strongest assets,” said Sarah McGinley-Smith, spokesperson for the company. “Employee input and collaboration are vital parts of our company’s success and we’re very honored to be recognized for our democratic practices.”
Organizations from all sectors that have been in operation for at least one year and have at least five employees can apply for the WorldBlu award. Employees complete an anonymous survey evaluating their organization’s practice of ten democratic principles such as decentralization, accountability, transparency, integrity and choice. The list is determined based on the surveys, coupled with essays detailing company policies and practices.
“The WorldBlu List seeks to shine a spotlight on the companies pioneering the next generation of business,” said WorldBlu Founder and CEO Traci Fenton. “The ego-driven, command and control business model is officially dead. WorldBlu List companies represent the future of work.”
