Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 4 to 5 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup milk or cream

Tips from our bakers

  • If you want some frosting left over to use in decorating, increase the ingredient amounts to: 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, approximately 6 cups confectioners' sugar, and up to 1/2 cup milk or cream.

Directions

1) In a large bowl, beat together the butter, shortening, and salt till fluffy.

2) Add about half the confectioners' sugar, and beat slowly until well blended.

3) Add the vanilla and half the milk or cream, and beat until fluffy.

4) Continue mixing in sugar and milk alternately until they've been completely incorporated.

5) Beat until the frosting is light and fluffy.

  • Fabulous frosting! Easy to make, great vanilla flavor, spreads easily, and sets up nicely. This will be my new go-to frosting.

  • If you use all butter, how much butter to use since you are eliminating the shortening...
Use the same amount of butter to shortening. If you need further assistance, please send us an email (bakers@kingarthurflour.com) or call, 1-800-827-6836. Elisabeth

  • Easy and delicious! At the suggestion of other reviewers, I used all butter, omitting the shortening with no change to the consistency. This is my new "go-to" for buttercream frosting.

  • Loved this frosting and used it as a frosting, filling and decorator icing. Texture was perfect and held up well. Added current jelly to one of the layers and it added nice surprise taste.

  • Wow! Once again, KAF, you've done it! This is the best ever buttercream frosting. I used all butter, though. Partnered with golden vanilla cake (this week's feature cake), it is absolutely delicious! For those of you looking for a moist yellow cake, I highly recommend the golden vanilla cake. It is exactly what KAF says it is!

  • Actually, I've been making this recipe since the early 1990's, I made this up, because I found by adding the shortening it is a great recipe to use as a decorating frosting.

  • Easy, easy! I added a bit more vanilla than it called for and should have substituted butter for the 1/3 shortening as I think that ingredient always has a funny aftertaste. Takes food coloring nicely.

  • I didn't like this at all. I am an avid baker, and I thought this was bland. I tried to add some lemon zest to it, to give it a little pick up, but that didn't work. This is horrible.

  • I just made this frosting today for my daughter's birthday party, where all the girls got to decorate cupcakes. It came out great, smooth and creamy, and the other parents were amazed I'd made it myself. It also colors very nicely with food coloring.
