Although not as traditional as store-bought franks, sausages offer a hearty alternative to filling a hotdog bun. We like topping ours simply with sautéed onions and peppers. Next time you're grilling hotdogs, throw some sausages on as well for this tasty sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 medium onions, peeled and sliced thin
  • 2 medium red bell peppers, sliced thin
  • 2 medium green bell peppers, sliced thin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 10 hotdog buns*
  • 10 Italian-style pork sausages, sweet or hot, cooked
  • *Try our New England Hotdog Buns.

Directions

1) Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan set over medium-high heat.

2) When the oil is hot, add the onions and peppers. Cook, stirring frequently, until softened, about 15 minutes.

3) Season with salt and pepper, and remove from the heat.

4) Divide the cooked vegetables evenly among the 10 buns, then top with the cooked sausages.

Yield: 10 sausage dogs.
