So, you think you need a deep fryer and some kind of special county fair chef expertise to make fried dough? Think again! This easy version uses a simple baking powder dough, and fries in just ¼" of vegetable oil–no messy deep frying necessary.

2 cups (8 1/2 ounces) King Arthur  Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons (1 ounce) cold butter
3/4 cup (6 ounces) lukewarm water

Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Work in the cold butter, using a pastry blender, your fingers, or a mixer. Stir in the warm water to make a soft dough. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.

Divide the dough into eight pieces. Working with one piece at a time, roll into a thin 5" round.

Heat ¼" vegetable oil to 375°F in an electric frying pan, or in a pan over a burner. If you’re not using an electric frying pan, you’ll have to guesstimate the temperature of the oil in your stovetop pan.

Pick up one dough disk, and carefully lower it into the pan. Let it cook for 45 to 60 seconds (it’ll puff up on top and become brown on the bottom), then flip it over and cook till brown on the other side, about 45 seconds. Remove from the oil and set on a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Place in a 200"F oven to keep warm while you make the remaining fried doughs.

Serve warm, with maple syrup or cider syrup; confectioners’ sugar, or cinnamon cugar; or the topping of your choice.
Yield: 8 fried doughs.

  • Great recipe. This was my first attempt at fried dough and everyone loved it! I will experiment with white whole wheat flour next and maybe try to make these a bit smaller like my mom used to make when I was little.. I fried them in a frying pan and adjusted the oil temp as I saw them get a bit too dark. 30 min total time from the time you put the ingredients together to the time you're done frying.

  • I made it as a fried dough and wasn't thrilled. I added a teaspoon sugar to the remaining dough (about 1/2 the recipe). Put about 1 inch water with a pinch salt in a pot and brought to a rolling boil. I dropped the remaining dough into the water one at a time and cooked about two minutes each. The recipe didn't make a good fry bread although it made excellent dumplings.

  • This is a great recipe that can be prepared quickly. I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out wonderfully! While still warm, I dropped one at a time into bread bag filled with powdered sugar. Once completely cooled, I filled a icing bag and used a large icing tip filled with some of my homemade chocolate buttercream. Yum yum...reminds me of the Dunkin Donuts chocolate- filled doughnut. Next time, I will fill them with lemon filling. Great recipe! Thanks KAF!!!

  • I stumbled upon this recipe one night while suffering from a huge fried dough craving. I love the fact that it doesn't use yeast and can be ready in 15 minutes! After reading the other reviews, I made a few modifications: I increased the butter by a tablespoon, added a teaspoon of sugar, and substituted whole milk for the water. I also didn't roll out the dough and instead formed the pieces into medium thickness teardrop shapes. The dough came out golden brown and crunchy on the outside and tender and fluffy on the inside. In short - perfect fried dough! I dusted them with powdered sugar and served with strawberry jam. This is my new favorite snack recipe.

  • Hello. Thanks for sharing this recipe! It was very simple to make, yet not exactly the fried dough flavor I was looking for... Upon tasting the recipe, I realized that it was quite salty. Perhaps the amount of salt in the recipe can be reduced (even halved). This did not come out as I expected it would and I did not really enjoy it, perhaps because it was too salty. Thanks

  • If you do it right, it will come out great. don't cook too long or they will be crunchy!
