King Arthur has a number of devoted bread-machine bakers, and this is everyone?s favorite sandwich loaf. High-rising, close-grained, and with a hint of sweetness, it slices without crumbling and keeps well on the counter. This version is perfect for Zojirushi's 1-pound bread machine.

  • KAF, you really should put this one first in the breadmaker recipe search list! I am not a baker...I have tried dozens of recipes trying to find a sandwich loaf that would hold together for everyday sandwiches. This is the one I will be "baking" several times a week! I followed the recipe perfectly the first time and came out perfectly. I changed the recipe, replacing 1 cup of King Arthur all-purpose flour with 1 cup of whole wheat and 2 tsp of vital gluten. And it came out perfectly! Truly the best bread recipe I have ever tried!

  • Yeah, finally I found a recipe for perfect sandwich bread. My children's sandwiches were falling apart using the other basic bread recipes. I was having trouble with active dry yeast, so I bought the KAF's instant yeast and had success using it. I have a regular sized bread machine and set it to the 1 lb. setting for this recipe. And followed the recipe exactly as written. My family is so happy that they have bread that is functional! Thanks again KAF. Yummy for French toast, grilled cheese you name it.

  • I added wheat germ and used dried skim milk powder with the water instead of milk, olive oil and honey instead of butter and sugar. It turned out perfect. Great recipe

  • This is an easy, delicious bread that's quick to make with ingredients on-hand. It rises high, has a nice crumb and is a little bit sweet. It's a keeper!

  • Really liked this recipe. I made it as noted then tried a variation...used 2 TBS maple syrup for the sweetner, added 1/3 cup of the KAF harvest grain mix and used half white whole wheat flour and then added 1 tsp of vital wheat gluten. It was a great multigrain bread!

  • This is my go-to recipe for sandwich bread for my mini-Zo. I've made it many, many times as written and it works beautifully every time. I've also substituted buttermilk for the milk, other flours such as KAF white whole wheat for half of the all purpose flour, added wheat germ, flax, and anything else that sounds interesting. It has never failed. The taste and texture are superb. Thank you all at KAF for another great recipe.

  • I have a 2lbs machine, but this worked just fine (set to 1 lbs) and was just the right size for slicing. The bread was quite good.
