This works well. I found that it worked the best if I let the starter develop in the refrigerator for a few days - the sour was more pronounced.

IF you are vegan, vegetarian, or keep kosher, DO NOT BUY THIS YEAST. I didn't learn until I got the package in the mail that it is grown on beef stock. The hotline could not answer my questions about kashrut and obviously if you do not want to use animal products at all this is not a good yeast to buy.
Thank you for your frank evaluation. We strive to answer questions to the best of our ability and resources. I apologize your questions about kosher practices were not answered when you called. We also strive to learn from our shortcomings and will be glad to refund you for this product. Irene @ KAF

Tiny little package. Sent with a sheet on how to make the starter. Go online this site under education and find out more about the intricacies of making and feeding. First batch of bread not so great...second pretty good. I imagine with time my starter will rend the sourness I want.

This is a wonderful product, that does what it says. I would give it five stars if I could buy it in larger quantities at a more reasonable price, but even so, it's worth the expense for the flavor and quality it adds to my french and baguette loafs.

Wonderful product. Have purchased it again and again and again. Start the starter the night before, then throw the ingredients into the bread machine to make dough. Bake in the oven! Fantabulous!

I am a life-long fan. My hubby had been asking for the really, really big holes in the French bread. I used this starter and the new and improved SAF yeast, and of course, the new French bread flour - and he got his wish. (W)hole-y delicious French bread. Formidable! (with French accent, please)

This makes the most perfect sour dough bread. Like it even better than the fresh sour dough starter...have tried them both. The bread comes out just like the artican type european sour dough breads.

I used this sourdough starter a few years ago and liked it but recently rediscovered it and have been making bread with it weekly, sometimes making several batches per week. I LOVE it because it always works predictably. When I kept a live sourdough starter in the past, its behavior would vary from batch to batch. Because bread made with this starter is predictable, sourdough bread can be made completely in a bread machine (using the programmable cycles on the Zoji BBCEC20), although for wheat sourdough, I prefer to shape the dough and bake it in the oven to get a traditional loaf with a very crisp crust. This starter is wheat and gluten-free, so for the first time there is a way to make gluten-free and allergy-diet sourdough bread. I have made delicious buckwheat (my favorite), quinoa, rice, 100% rye, part wheat/part rye, and spelt sourdough bread. The new recipes will be in a revision of Easy Breadmaking for Special Diets (3rd Edition) which should be coming out this fall. This is a GREAT PRODUCT! which makes GREAT bread! And to top it off, there?s no way I can kill the starter by neglecting to feed it!

My fiancee' loves to bake, and he was so pleased with this starter. However, he would love to purchase it in bulk if possible. Any ideas?

I liked the taste of the bread, but I am not sure that I want to work with this starter very often, it was very slow to rise, much longer than recipe states.
