I make sourdough bread often, and I was hoping that this would add a nice tang to bread-machine bread that did not include my sourdough starter. I found the flavor of this product to be "sour" but also to have an unpleasant "off" flavor that compared unfavorably to the real deal. It's a great idea, it just didn't taste right to me. Thanks anyway!

I use this product in making pizza dough. I used the Lara Brody product until it was discontinued. The KA product imparts a pizza oven taste to my pizza; I use 1 Tbl per 2 cups of KA flour (equal parts unbleached and bread flour). It provides a noticeable boost of flavor, and I have introduced fellow home pizza makers to using it.

I read the other reviews, and while I agree that it does not produce an extremely sour dough flavor, I like it because I don't like a really strong sourdough. I made the bread on the package and it was wonderful! One of the best loaves of bread I have ever produced. If you are looking for sourdough bread like you get in San Francisco, then yes you will be disappointed. Me? I love it. This is perfect for my needs. I also use 6 tsp. in the Harvest Bread with the cranberries and pecans. It is really good!

This is rather mild, particularly compared to the Laura Brody sourdough enhancer that KAF used to sell (apparently discontinued in 2005). It does add a pleasant depth to the flavor of a white+wheat bread. I start with 3c white, 1.5c white whole wheat, and 1/4c of this stuff to about 13-14oz water in our old Zo.

Tried it in our regular bread multigrain bread machine recipe -- no sourdough flavor at all. Tried it with a French bread recipe, ditto. Tried the recipe on the package, again no sourdough flavor to speak of. Since I have a very good sense of smell and taste I was particularly disappointed that there wasn't even a hint of soudough flavor, especially considering the price of this item. My wife, who has a less sensitive nose and palate agrees -- no sourdough flavor at all. Definitely not a solution for us casual bread machine bakers.
