Irish inspiration

  • A coarsely ground, soft red whole wheat flour.
  • Ideal for Ireland's signature brown breads.
  • 3 pound package.
TEST KITCHEN TIP: This is a lovely “soft” flour, coarsely ground, a really nice match for the flour used in Ireland for their whole-grain breads. For any of your brown bread or soda bread recipes calling for “wholemeal” flour, this is what you want.

I just made the Irish Brown Bread to celebrate St Patrick's Day and it turned out gorgeous! I can not wait to make it again.

the recipe on the back makes the best "soup" bread bar none and no rise so quick to the table.

As a frequent traveler to Ireland, I have found this flour to produce very authentic Brown Bread, though I make mine as I was taught in West Clare - no oil added - as we say in Ireland, you put the butter ON it not IN it! We also use an equal mix of wheat and white flour so of course I use about 2-3 cups of KAF all-purpose flour mixed with the coarse wheat!

This is nice stuff. Just spooning it out of the bag makes me feel good. I'm not too much on whole wheat flours because of the sour flavor that can happen. This doesn't have that. It's nutty and has a touch of sweet - it's not sweet, but makes you think "sweet." I followed the bag recipe for Irish brown bread for my first use. I added a scant hand full of dried blueberries to the mixture. Great bread for meals or desert, I think! My first loaf didn't last long enough to worry about food pairings.

This delicious flour is fabulous not only for Irish-style brown breads, but for flavor and texture in a standard loaf - and is great in this fast beer bread recipe: BEER BREAD 3 c flour (1/2 Irish) 1/3 c sugar 1 tsp salt 1TBS baking powder 1 bottle beer Preheat oven to 400. Put bread in, immediately reduce to 375. Bake 25 minutes. Reduce heat to 350, bake another 20 minutes.

Just back from a 3 week visit with Mom in N. Ireland. A major goal for the trip was to learn how she makes perfect wheaten bread, converting her handful of this, splash of that to actual measurements. After about 15 loaves, I had the recipe. After returning to the US, I ordered a couple of bags of this Wholemeal and began experimenting. I've finally almost got it! KA Irish Wholemeal is very close to Mom's, just not quite as coarse. Great stuff. A coarse choice in 5lb bags would be perfect!

Irish Brown Bread, not to be confused with soda bread, is a healthy no knead yeast bread that's loaded with flavor.l Cannot be replicated without this specially ground flour. Pair up with a bowl of homemade soup and a guinness and you could be sitting in an Irish pub.

Thank you for offering the coarse flour. Please make it available in organic, as I've switched to using only organic products in all my baking and cooking. Thank you!

Worked great in Hamelman's Irish Soda Bread. Best I've ever had--exceeded all my expectations.
