WHY TO BUY: Where else can you find FRESH sourdough starter–not dried? And what a history this has–it’s descended from a starter that’s been lovingly nurtured here in New England since the 1700s. When you feed it, it quickly becomes your own, adapting itself to your own region and climate. But know that generations of bakers before you have made wonderful bread with a bit of this same bubbling brew… how romantic is that?

I purchased this some time ago and I have been enjoying the bread and the crock. My husband loves sourdough but the instructions for some starters were complicated and confusing. So I never made it. This starter is fantastic to work with. I have given extra away to friends and everyone ones it. If you don't have a starter and want a great dependable one this one is it.

I highly recommend this set. The sourdough starter made excellent bread the first time, and I'm confident it will only get better. The crock with the logo is just beautiful. I love it!

After coming home from a weekend away to find out that my roommate had thrown out my starter, I figured that was it. Since my grandmother had passed away years ago (who got her starter from her grandmother!) and I was the only baker in the family, several generation’s of sourdown just went out the door. Her claim was that it was “stinky”. Over the years, I tried several times to get my own starter going, but it simply would not “take”. So when I saw this fresh starter, I thought I would give it a try and I am glad I did. While not yet as tangy as what I had, given time it most likely will develop. The first batch of bread was quite pleasing. It will never be my grandmother’s version, but at least I can start baking again and hopefully I can pass this on to my daughter. The roommate? Got rid of her fast.

I have made with good success the Extra-Tangy Sourdough bread, but I want my bread even tangier. Is there a way to make the sourdough tangier, or will it become tangier as it ages.
Yes, your starter will develop a stronger personality over time. An occasional feeding with whole wheat can help too. MJR @ KAF

I ordered this sourdough and crock set, all excited to make my own starter. However, when it arrived, it was printed on the label: "produced in a facility that packages products containing eggs, milk, soy, tree nuts, and wheat." I am severely allergic to peanuts, and this information was NOT listed anywhere on the product page on the website, otherwise I would not have made the order. I e-mailed customer service and said as much, and that I would like a refund since I was not provided with this information, but they only gave me $6 for the starter and told me I could pay for shipping to ship their crock back if I wanted a refund. So, I am out $25 (total order for the crock set was about $31) for something I can't even use. I am extremely disappointed as King Arthur Flour products came highly recommended...but after this I will not order again.
Tracy - I am extremely sorry you were not left completely satisfied. We will absolutely credit you for the crock and any return shipping costs. You have a very good point. No where does it mention what type of facility this product is produced in. I will work on having that information included on our website. I wish I were able to go into your order and credit you for the crock immediately. However, in a product review, I am not left with the information I need to do this. Please send us an email to customercare@kingarthurflour.com or call us at 1-800-827-6836. A Customer Care Representative will be happy to help you promptly. Elisabeth @ KAF

Both items were delivered soon after my order. The starter instructions were simple to follow, as were the sample recipes included in the package. My first pair of loaves were already delicious, with a great sourdough flavor, and a huge hit with friends. The second pair (rye loaves) were equally delicious. I'm looking forward to continuing to perfect my technique with this starter, and to try new recipes.

This was the second time I have made bread. My first loaf was Jewish Rye,it was average. My Soudough bread (extra tangy recipe) was heaven!I also sprayed the oven walls with water. The crock is well made and cute. Thanks KA for answering my bread questions. This item would make a diffrent and usefull holiday gift!

I ordered this last month and my son used it just this week (we have used it since I ordered it!) as a science project. His 6th grade did a taste in and he was able to use this sourdough starter and recipe that came with it as his project. Other kids came with lame cake mixes from boxes and he used this. It was easy enough that an 11 year old boy could pull it off. Need I say more? I high recommend this. Much better tasting than making it from scratch ourselves which is what we had been doing all of these years!

I am now eating my bread and LOVING it. I USED your step by step instructions @ found it fairly easy, both for the starter @ the bread recipe . A listing of actual convient times used in the rustic sourdough bread recipe would have made it simpler. Also when i iniationally did my starter i had some confusion as to differentiating between the fridge starter @ the recipe starter. I used the steps online that was with the crock @starter combo. very usefull. ALL@all a very satisfying experiance. ASTOUNDING TASTE @ structure @NICE RISE.

I received this set as a wedding/birthday present from my then-fiance (now husband) who fervently hoped it would inspire me to make home-baked sourdough bread. The starter produced exquisite loaves from the beginning: tangy, high-rising, with a perfect artisan crust and wonderful crumb. It becomes even better as it evolves and matures, however, and after several months of once per week bread baking (plus waffles, crumpets, buns, pizza and etc.), there is no praise too lofty for this starter! The crock is lovely, too--just the right size to keep the starter happy and contained. Mine did at one point attain a higher state of consciousness, crawl from its crock, and began to explore the surrounding counter top, but I fault the both the hot weather and inattentiveness of said starter's owner for that. Otherwise, it's become a perfectly well-behaved and highly valued member of the household. My advice to anyone just starting down the path to sourdough joy is to be patient and feel free to tweak everything as needed. Depending on the weather (and the accuracy of my measurements) I sometimes have to add more or less water, and the counter-time needed to achieve rise and active bubbling can vary. The efforts are relatively minimal, however, and the results more than offset the starter's care and feeding. Besides which, the entire process is great fun!
