I used this at Christmas and thought it had a strange flavor. I think I may have used too much food coloring or forgot the vanilla--or both. This morning we iced more cookies and I actually kind of liked it. I found the recipe easy to use and easy to divide in half. I will buy this again for next year's gingerbread cookies.
Perhaps the flavor you detected was from the egg whites making the icing taste slightly like meringue? This product is so easy to use, I doubt I'll ever make royal icing or cookie icing from scratch again! Irene @ KAF

I love the convienience of this mix! The fact that you can use it 3 different ways is great, However the taste leaves a lot to be desired. It sort of has a mapley chemical taste, very weird. I masked the taste with different high quality extracts and it taste fine and the texture once dried on cookies is phenominal! It is worth purchasing even if it's natural flavor is a bit off.

I really did not like this product at all. I agree with KKBr from Maryland about the strange flavor. I used it on my Christmas sugar cookies and even my husband said it tasted strange. I bought 2 bags of this mix and I have no idea what I'll do with the 2nd bag. I won't be using it. This is the only product I've purchased from King Arthur that I was not thrilled with.
Gve us a call and we'll do our best to make you happy! Molly @ KAF

Used this for the 1st time yesterday, what a pleasure to make, use & enjoy on the cookies I made. I was hoping for good results but this was a lot better than good. It was easy to make, so creamy, no lumps & the end product was great---not too sweet which was a very good thing. Great job guys!! Merry Christmas to everyone!!!!

Has a strange flavor. Difficult to dilute for piping. Not much easier than using meringue powder to make royal icing. Really a waste of money without a resulting saving of time.
I'm sorry you were disappointed. Please contact us, 800-827-6836. Frank @ KAF>

Great frosting for cut out sugar cookies. Made the ladybug cookies for grandkids. Worked extremely well.

Absolutely flawless, every single person that I gave valentine cookies to LOVED the icing. I added a bit of pure almond extract for some of the liquid. Cannot wait to make Easter cookies. Extremely easy to work with and set up perfectly. Worked well for marbling.

I was very impressed with the flavor and consistancy of the frosting. It was not too too sweet so that it overwhelmed the cookie, but instead it enhanced the flavor of the cookie.

I just ordered two more bags of this. Gets wonderfully hard and crunchy and is a new must for me for my Xmas cookies. With a little coloring paste you can make it whatever color you wish and by varying the thickness (I made it thick, took some out for piping, and thinned out the rest to dip cookies in as glaze) you have a wonderful all purpose frosting for cookies. Forget buttercream, this is da bomb!
