Spider Web Brownies

We've taken our favorite Fudge Brownie recipe and given it a mint-flavored cream cheese spiderweb for Halloween. Your little ghosts, pirates, Jedi knights and superheroes will be thrilled!
Ingredients
Filling
- 4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1/2 teaspoon mint flavoring (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare our Fudge Brownie recipe, and spread the batter in a greased 9" x 13" pan, or two 8" round pans. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Combine the cream cheese, sugar and flour in a small bowl, and mix until smooth. Add the egg yolk and flavoring (if using), mixing until smooth once again. Transfer the mixture to a disposable pastry bag, and cut just the very tip off the end.
- Place a small pool of the mixture in the center of the brownie batter. Draw circles around this pool about 1" apart, moving out from the center each time. Once the circles are drawn, take a table knife, wet the tip, and draw it back and forth through the circles. The knife will draw the cream cheese filling into arcs. See this recipe's accompanying blog for step-by-step photos.
- Use any remaining filling to trace the path where the knife traveled, to create the spokes of the web.
- Bake the brownies for 30 minutes, until the brownies just barely pull away from the edge of the pan. The center will rise while baking, but will sink back level once the brownies are cool. Remove them from the oven and cool before cutting.

Tips from our bakers
- Make sure your cream cheese is soft (room temperature) before you use it; using ice-cold cream cheese can produce a lumpy filling.

It was excellent, but my spider wasn't very successful. How did you make yours?
With many recipes, there's a blog to show you how. Right under "directions" for the recipe, click on the button "see this recipes blog". You can also find it by looking for this title: Spook up your sweets: fondant ghosts, spiderweb brownies, and cookie spiders Happy Baking! Irene@KAF
Delicius! I change the mint for orange escence great flavor!!! I♥ orange/chocolate combination
Good, and easy. If I make this again, though, I would use rum flavor, or coconut, or hazelnut instead of the mint. Didn't care for that!
I made these for Halloween using the "Tasting is Believing Whole-Grain Brownies" recipe as the brownie base. The spiderweb design was fun and they tasted great!
I hate cream cheese. Is there a way to do this with marshmallow or something else? I so want to make them - my birthday is Halloween and these will be so fun!
You could certainly try a Marshmallow filling. I think a Peanut Butter filling would be good as well. kelsey@KAF
I have never had any problem with boxed brownies and the several brownies I have made from scratch have been pretty mediocre, but this recipe is pure heaven! I love it and have switched from boxed brownies!
this is a great recipe!!! it looks sensational and tastes as it looks. you won´t go wrong with this one.
This was a super-easy, quick way to jazz up the King Arthur Guaranteed Brownies! My 4 year old and I mixed up the brownies and the cream cheese, and in no time, it looked like a real spiderweb! Delicious as well! Thanks for the wicked good idea! ;)
I loved this recipe! My kids went crazy over it as did my husband. The brownie is moist, fudgy, and cakey all at the same time! This is sure to please all! I would love to make it in a round pan as shown, but am not sure of the size. Would a 9 in springform pan work?
Yes, a 9" springform would work very well for this. Have fun! MJR @ KAF
