I just ordered my 5th lock-top flour container to store AP, Bread, Pastry, Rice/Almond, and Organic Whole Wheat flours. These containers do hold a 5 lb. bag of flour if you lay the flour and plastic container flat on the side to insert. I prefer to store flour in the bag so I can see the contents/best by date without having to mark the container. Since I consistently weigh ingredients, potential compacting does not affect my baking results. But, it should be easy to aerate the flour for bakers who prefer to measure by volume. The consistent sizing and ergonomic handle makes pantry storage and retrieval easy. I highly recommend these PBA-free containers.
I come down on the side that says this container is absolutely perfect for 5 lb bags of flour. I have just ordered two more so that I can keep a larger variety of special flours in my spare frig and freezer. Makes storage so much easier and neater and I'm always sure of fresh flour when stored well.
I find these as Excellent containers. They fit all my 5 bag flour's, they slip right into the container no problem, and of course the cup won't fit until some of the flour is removed. I had no problems placing my bags into these containers. I ordered several containers and I noticed one top had a hole in it, I called KA and the rep with no problems sent out another!!!! Great Service!!! My pantry is more organized and looks eye pleasing. Great Buy!!!!
I'm a little mystified by those claiming they can't fit a 5lb bag of flour in this container. It's exactly the right size and I wouldn't want it to be any larger as it'd be more difficult to fit on my shelves. I have two, one to hold my bag of KAF whole wheat, which I keep in the freezer, and another to hold my back of KAF all-purpose. Works really nicely and is easy to measure from. Seems to keep a nice, tight seal and is easy to open and carry.
Works great for me. I have several to hold 5 lb bags of A-P flour, bread flour, soft flour. I put my 5 lb bag of KAF all-purpose I'm using in a canister, and my spare 5 lb bag in one of these. I never had a problem getting the bags in. Seal is easy to do.The square shape allows more efficient use of space in the pantry.
I love these containers! Have one for each type of flour. Yes, at first I was puzzled at how to get the bag of flour into the container but found the solution. With the unopened bag of flour standing on the counter, to one side of the bag, front and back, use your hands and firmly push in to make an indentation that mimics the shape of the indentation of the flour container. Firmly slide the bag into the container. I've done this with many bags of flour and it always works. Then I open the bag, cut off the excess paper at the top , then put the lid on.
Shame on me for not reading the reviews before purchasing this item. But shame on King Arthur Flour for claiming that a 5 lb bag of flour will fit in this container. It does not!! I tried shoving the entire bag in, and it would not go. I was afraid if I shoved any harder the entire bag would split open, or the flour would be so compacted it would be difficult to scoop out. So then I tried pouring the flour itself into the container and it didn't even begin to hold all of it. I loved the idea of including a scoop, but as the flour doesn't even fit, obviously the scoop doesn't either. Why not just make this larger to actually hold the amount of flour you claim that it does (easily)??? I've always been a fan of your products, but this one is a total dud.
Hi there. This container really does hold an unopened 5lb bag of flour, we've used it many times. First, be sure to remove the enclosed plastic measuring cup from the container. Next, try placing the container flat on its longer side and then putting the bag of flour in front of the top opening in a similar position. Pat the bag of flour into a more rectangular shape and it should slide right in. MJR @ KAF
My plan was to use this container, 20.00. With shipping, for my KA flour. While the bag will fit, it's pretty tight. I think it should be bigger. I think I will struggle to get flour out. Not sure if it's worth returning :(
If you put the contents of a 5 lb bag of flour into this containor, it will be very compacted. If you like to scoop flour lightly into a measuring cup, this will not work well. The containor design is excellent, but should be a bit larger. I will try putting the whole bag into it, but think the issue of compacted flour will still be a problem. Used to have the big square KA flour holder, and liked it, but it takes up too much space and cant be lifted with one hand as the Sistema can. You're certainly correct in pointing out that measuring a compact cup of flour is not desirable. Since measuring flour by volume is always a little variable, we recommend either measuring your flour by weight, or using this method to measure flour by volume: fluff up the flour with a fork, sprinkle or spoon the flour into the cup, and then sweep the cup with a knife to level. This method of measuring flour helps avoid any issues related to compacted flour. Barb@KAF
I am pleased with the ergonomic design, and the quality of the seal. Here in CA I have such a problem with pantry moths everything has to go into airtight containers. I had no trouble putting a 5 lb bag of King Arthur flour in the container. I laid the bag on its back on the counter to flatten it a bit, and it slipped right into the container, bag and all. I am mystified at the comments that state the bag won't fit.
