Your secret to better biscuits!
This non-GMO leavening agent has long been beloved and used in the Northeast; New Englanders swear by it for unforgettably light, fluffy biscuits. Don't be fooled by the name: There's no cream in it! It's similar to baking powder or cream of tartar, but many bakers prefer it for the lightness and loftiness it gives biscuits. Includes a recipe for classic Maine biscuits.

My husband loves biscuits with homemade strawberry jam, but I've never made biscuits that were as good, or better, than some restaurants. That is, until tonight! I had purchased the Bakewell Cream awhile ago, but didn't use it until tonight. They were the best biscuits I ever made and will be my go-to recipe from now on. They were very high, moist and delicious! At first, I thought they would probably burn at such a high temperature (475 for 5 minutes), but then I turned the oven off for the recommended 5 minutes, and they came out nice and brown - perfect! Very easy to make.
The Bakewell Cream ad says it is non-GMO; yet there are concerns it is GMO. Which is correct? I don't use any GMO products and go mostly organic. Please advise. We are very sorry for any confusion these older reviews may have caused. Bakewell has now changed their formula and while the results in your baking will be the same, it no longer has any GMO ingredients in it! Maggie@KAF
I finally achieved the beautiful high biscuits that I've always seen in pictures but never been able to replicate.
I was extremely disappointed KAF did not mention Bakewell Cream contains GMOs in their "store" ad. You're reputation regarding nutrition/wholesome products was good enough in my mind I didn't hesitate to order this product. I was shocked when I received it and certainly would NOT have ordered it had I known about its content. Be honest... make sure prospective customers know the truth about this product. Don't lose customers over not being truthful. We're genuinely sorry to hear the labeling caught you off guard in this case. We at KAF are committed to transparency and are actively considering how to best share this kind of information with our customers. We appreciate your suggestion to include it right here on the product page and have shared it with our Merchandising Team for their consideration. In the meantime, please know that we are always happy to share ingredient information prior to purchase when you call our Customer Support Team. We are also working to source as many ingredients as possible which are both non-GMO and meet our high standards for baking performance. This is a work in progress, but it's our intent to transition our KAF line of products over to those which only contain sourced non-GMO ingredients. Of course, If you're unhappy with the Bakewell Cream for any reason, we'd be happy to arrange a refund for you. Please give our friendly Customer Support Team a call at 800-827-6836 so we can make this right for you. Barb@KAF
This is a review I never thought I would write and I put in a lot of thought before putting pen to paper, so to speak. When I ordered Bakewell Cream I was told I could use it just as I use ordinary baking powder. I have a favorite baking powder recipe and it never has failed me. I tried it twice with Bakewell Cream and it yielded something like hockey pucks. The conversion on the can is confusing so I am back to using ordinary baking powder. Sorry. I still love everything else about KAF.
We're so sorry for the confusion about Bakewell Cream products. New England Cupboard - the makers of Bakewell Cream also make Bakewell Cream Baking Powder that is indeed a 1 to 1 substitute for baking powder. In order for your tried and true baking powder biscuit recipe to work with the Bakewell Cream, it must be used with baking soda. Perhaps an easier conversion than the formula printed on the can is 2 teaspoons Bakewell Cream plus 1 teaspoon baking soda = 3 teaspoons baking powder. Let's get you back to happy baking! Irene@KAF
I used your product for years in Maine. I have yet to find your product on any store shelves in this state. Now that i found it on my computer i would not use anything else. The best biscuits I've ever had. My now adult children will be very happy. Thanks for such a great product
I love Bakewell Cream, never has failed me. I did have a friend say that when she use it it left a strange taste in her mouth was wondering if it might be that to much was used I have never had this problem. Also can you use a little less of the Bakewell Cream and get the same (fluffy giant results?) ThanksHi Julie, We are happy to hear that you love the Bakewell Cream. If too much is used in a recipe that would give your baked good a strange flavor. You could try to reduce the amount of Bakewell Cream in your recipe but it may not rise as high. Happy Baking! Amanda@KAF
Why didn't I ever know about Bakewell Cream before? I'm a diligent home cook and @ 50 yrs, young, I feel I have missed many years of EXCEPTIONAL biscuits! I have always made Very Good Buttermilk biscuits, but my husband and son could NOT stop raving about these. Nor did they stop devouring until the pan was empty with naught a crumb. I saw other reviews of the "metallic taste". As a nurse, I know some have a heightened sensitivity of the tongue to metals. Luckily, we do not. Thank you for my new, "go-to", biscuits!
Very disappointed that after I received this product, you happen to mention that it contains GMOs. Had I known that beforehand, I would not have purchased it. Now I will have to research and inquire of everything I buy from KAF. I'm sure it works great, but so do other products without the GMOs.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. You may be happy to learn that the majority of King Arthur Flour's products, including all of our flours, are produced using ingredients that are sourced non-GMO. Furthermore, it's our initiative to source as many ingredients as possible which are both non-GMO and meet our high standards for baking performance.
These efforts are ongoing, and we'll continue to evolve our product offerings to best meet the needs of our customers, the same way we always have. Please feel encouraged to check back in with us about the status of products engaged in this process as we work towards complete non-GMO sourcing. Don't hesitate to get in touch with customer service for further assistance as well. MJR@KAF
The Original Bakewell Cream is absolutely essential to my gluten free cornbread recipe! I cook it in small batches with stellar results with a crispy outer crust and a mile high center! Tender and moist and delicious!
