Baked is Best! Say No to Raw Dough

Consumer safety is our top priority. We want to remind you that flour is not a ‘ready to eat’ ingredient. When safe handling processes are followed, including fully baking, products made with flour are safe for eating.

  • Flour is made from wheat that is an agricultural product and grown outdoors. Bacteria that may be present are not eliminated in the milling process.
  • You should not eat or taste uncooked dough or batter.
  • Remember to wash your hands, work surfaces, and utensils thoroughly after contact with raw dough products or flour, and to never eat raw dough or batter.
  • For more information, refer to the following: https://www.cdc.gov/features/no-raw-dough/index.html. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warns consumers to not consume raw products made with flour. E. coli 026 is killed by heat through baking, frying, sautéing, or boiling products made with flour.

Questions and Answers

Why are you updating your Oct. 3rd recall expansion?

On June 13th, King Arthur Flour voluntarily recalled six specific lots of 5 lb. Unbleached All-Purpose Flour. Our team promptly connected with customers and distributors via a broad array of platforms to promote safety and awareness. We also worked closely with our milling partner and the FDA to ensure we were doing everything we could to guarantee all affected flour was accounted for. When sample testing turned up additional lots linked to the initial recall, we again worked diligently with our milling partner to understand the full scope of potentially affected flour in order to recall it and promote awareness among our customers. Now, we’ve become aware that there were omissions in the milling data provided to us by our partner mill, which has led us to update three of the lots in our recall expansion.

Is this expansion update related to the June 13th voluntary recall?

Yes. King Arthur Flour, Inc. has been notified by ADM Milling Co. that three additional product lot codes of Unbleached All-Purpose Flour 5 lb. were omitted from the original data they provided as part of our expanded recall on October 3rd. That expansion was in direct relation to our June 13th voluntary recall.

Where were the affected bags of flour sold?

Acknowledging all lots included in our voluntary recall, bags of Unbleached All-Purpose Flour (5 lb.) with a lot code matching the affected product were sold through retailers and distributors nationwide, and sold through our website, catalogue, and store in Norwich, VT. Bags of Unbleached All-Purpose Flour (25 lb.) with a Best Used By Date and UPC matching the affected product were only sold through Costco stores.

The three lots of flour specifically referenced in our Nov. 1 update were not sold through our website, catalogue, or store in Norwich, VT.

Are any other King Arthur Flour products affected?

No other King Arthur Flour products are affected by this voluntary recall. We utilize tracking processes to follow the chain of use for flour that goes into King Arthur Flour baking blends, mixes, and other products so that we can be certain none of the affected lots were incorporated in this way.

I can't find or read the lot number on my bag of flour. What should I do?

For affected bags of Unbleached All-Purpose Flour (5 lb.), the Best Used By date and lot number can be found on the bottom of the side panel, below the nutrition facts panel; see photos below. For affected bags of Unbleached All-Purpose Flour (25 lb.), the Best Used By date and UPC can be located in different locations on the bag.

Keep in mind that when safe handling processes are utilized, (see: https://bakewith.us/safehandling) including fully baking flour in a recipe, it is considered to be safe for general consumption.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please email us at productrecall@kingarthurflour.com or call our Consumer Hotline at 866-797-9178.
