Cheese-Stuffed Pull-Apart Bread

Recipe by Jonathan Brasil

Fluffy bread that’s stuffed with melty cheese and flooded with herby, garlicky butter —what’s not to love? The “hardest” part of the process is filling the dough pieces with cheese and rolling them into balls. It’s a fun job for little hands, and as a reward for their hard work, they can have first dibs on the cheesiest piece of pull-apart bread. While this bread needs no accessories, a warm bowl of marinara sauce would be more than welcome for dipping.

Instructions

Prevent your screen from going dark as you follow along.
  1. Grease an 8" square or 9" round pan.

  2. To make the dough: In a medium bowl, combine the dough ingredients using a spoon or spatula. The dough will look a little dry at first but will become soft and somewhat cohesive as you stir. It’s OK if it looks a little rough at this stage.

  3. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until it becomes smooth and somewhat bouncy, about 1 minute.

  4. To add the filling: Divide the dough into 24 equal pieces (about 28g each). Keeping the rest of the dough pieces covered as you work, slightly flatten each piece and place a cube of cheese in the center. Gather the edges of the dough together and pinch to seal the seam, enclosing the cheese inside. Roll each piece into a ball (in your hands or on the surface) and place into the prepared pan.

  5. Cover the dough and let rise for 30 to 60 minutes, or until puffy. While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 375°F.

  6. To add the topping: Once your dough has risen, in a small bowl, combine the melted butter and seasoning packet. Pour evenly over the pull-apart bread. Sprinkle with the shredded cheese.

  7. Bake the cheesy pull-apart bread for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

  8. Remove the pull-apart bread from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Serve warm, either straight from the pan or turned out onto a plate.

  9. Storage information: The pull-apart bread is best served warm, fresh from the oven. Reheat, covered in aluminum foil, for 15 to 20 minutes at 350°F or until warmed throughout.

Tips from our Bakers

  • Start with an 8-ounce block of cheese and cut off 2 ounces to shred for the topping. Cut the remaining 6 ounces into 24 cubes for the filling, and you’ll have just the right amount of cheese for this savory pull-apart loaf.
